  • Flammable Gas diamonds are used for substances such as butane, propane and acetylene. Class 2 is divided into three divisions: Flammable gases (2.1), Non-flammable, non toxic gases (2.2) and Toxic Gases (2.3).
  • Non-Flammable Compressed Gas Diamonds are for compressed substances which are non-flammable, non-toxic and likely to cause asphyxiation or oxidisers. Class 2 is divided into three divisions: Flammable gases (2.1), Non-flammable, non toxic gases (2.2) and Toxic Gases (2.3).
  • Toxic Gas Class 2 is divided into three divisions: Flammable gases (2.1), Non-flammable, non toxic gases (2.2) and Toxic gases (2.3).
  • Flammable liquids are those which readily give off flammable vapours e.g. petrol and acetone. The liquids themselves do not burn but the vapours that evaporate from them burn when mixed with the air and are ignited.
  • Flammable Solid Class 4.1 contains solids which are easily ignited by sparks or flames. Some substances may need to be refrigerated as they be unstable if allowed to warm up. This class contains self-reactive and related substances that are liable to undergo strongly exothermic reaction and solid desensitised explosives that may explode if not 'diluted' properly.
  • Spontaneously Combustible Label Class 4.2 contains substances liable to spontaneous combustion. Phrophoric Substances which may ignite and burn in contact with air or self-heating substances which may heat up slowly and ignite.
  • Organic Peroxide Label Class 5.2 contains unstable substances containing both fuel and oxygen, which can cause fire or explosions. These substances are occasionally carried under controlled temperatures. They are recognised by their chemical property, in that they contain a bivalent -0-0 structure.
  • Oxidizing Agent Class 5.1 contains substances that whilst not necessarily combustible, can assist the combustion of other materials through the provision of oxygen.
  • Class 6.1 is for toxic substances. These are substances which, if ingested, inhaled or absorbed by skin contact are liable to cause death, serious injury or harm health.
  • Class 8 is for corrosive substances. These are substances and articles that will cause severe damage by chemical action when in contact with living tissue or other goods or materials.
  • Class 9 contains Miscellaneous dangerous substances. These are substances and articles which present a danger to people or the environment and which are not covered by the other classes. This class includes a wide variety of materials, including asbestos goods and lithium batteries.
  • Class 4.3 contains substances which in contact with water emit flammable gases. They need to be carried in watertight container - some are carried under paraffin, grease or in tanks under an inert gas blanket.
  • Class 6.2 contains Infectious Substances. These are substances which can cause disease in humans and animals. These may include specimens and clinical waste from medical centres, hospitals and dental practices.
  • Class 7 contains Radioactive Substances. These are substances which can cause disease in humans and animals. These may include medical specimens and clinical waste from medical centres, hospitals and dental practices.
